The aim of this course, in association with Foundations of Human Biology 2, is to provide an understanding of the healthy human body as it interacts with the environment. This course focuses on the basic structures associated with the maintenance of homeostasis. The topics that will be covered in this course are human body organisation, basic chemistry, cells and tissues (including blood, bone and muscle), and the cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous and endocrine systems. Together, the Foundations in Human Biology 1 & 2 courses will form a solid foundation that you will no doubt draw upon across your studies and career. The video below has been developed by Dr Andrea Stringer. In the video, Dr Stringer will introduce you to the concepts that you will explore over the next 10 weeks.
Course Learning Objectives
1. Describe the structures and functions of the human body using appropriate terminology
2. Describe the normal structure and function of cells and tissues
3. Describe the structure and function of the muscular, skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous and endocrine systems, and blood.
4. Explain how body systems interact with each other to maintain homeostasis
Course Overview
There are ten weekly topics covering a range of concepts that will begin every Monday morning with videos, self-review exercises, discussion forums, and other activities spanning across the course. You are expected to complete each Topic week-by-week and will receive an announcement at the start of each week reminding you that a new module has begun. Each module's content and activity is designed to help you explore the concept in depth and begin to apply what you are learning which will inform your assessments in this course.
