Course aim
In this course, you'll develop an advanced understanding of normality and abnormality. You'll be introduced to the epidemiology, aetiology and treatment of specific psychological disorders, including anxiety disorder, somatoform disorder, mood disorder, substance use disorder, eating disorder, personality disorder and schizophrenia.
You'll also further develop your understanding of the National Practice Standards for the mental health workforce.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
LO1. demonstrate the ability to explain, compare and critically evaluate the various ways of defining the concept of a mental [or psychological] disorder
LO2. recognise the typical symptoms of the major psychological disorders
LO3. suggest effective forms of treatment for management of psychological disorders
LO4. analyse and explain the major theoretical and empirical perspectives on the aetiology (causes) of the major psychological disordersLearning activities
This 10-week course is designed to scaffold your learning through the weekly content. To help with this, we've included formative assessments (learning activities) in each week's content.
Although these activities are not graded, we recommend that you engage with them, so that you'll be better prepared for your graded assessments.
