This week we will be studying the notion of sampling and examining the different sampling techniques usually employed in quantitative and qualitative research. Sampling is an important component of research design which is the third step in the research process. The selection of an appropriate sampling design can make a world of difference between obtaining data that will provide us with useful results and data that have no value whatsoever. We hope that, by the end of the lesson, you will be able to distinguish the different sampling techniques and select appropriate sampling techniques for a given research question.
Non-probability Sampling
To check your knowledge of non-probability sampling complete the following questions. Let us say that you are doing a study of health, wellbeing and safety concerns of sex workers. Can you match the following descriptions of a sampling technique with the type of non-probability sampling?
