Foundations of Health and Physical Activity is a first year course from UniSA Online's Bachelor of Health Science (Nutrition and Exercise). It is also available as an elective in many of our other online degrees.
Macronutrient periodisation is the process of modulating macronutrient intakes while reducing the chance of nutrient deficiencies over an extended period of time. It works by promoting a day-to-day fluctuation of macronutrient intake to match the exercise periodisation needs for fuelling activity and building muscle and gaining strength. Up to now, we have always referred to the AMDR recommendations for the percentage of energy that is derived from protein, carbohydrate and fat. It is important to realise that in NEP we need to discuss CHO, protein, and fat in absolute amounts (gram per day). With nutrient periodisation there is sometimes concern that athletes will not always get their nutrient requirements on a low intake day, but the reality is that their low intake days are similar to what people with normal activities of daily living are consuming and the RDI’s are met in these cases. Even if athletes do consume less on a day, over a period of 3-4 days they will meet their requirements, so there is no need to consider supplements. This will become quite evident as we work through the case studies using Foodworks.
