Task
Watch and annotate the video and identify any concerns you have about Terry’s work status and workplace rights.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this task, you will be able to:
- identify features of a workplace relationship that indicate an employment contract
- recognise rights that exist for those in an employment contract
Due
Early in week 2
Notes
Every day at work we are impacted by the laws relating to employment. Consider the case of Terry in the scenario video/rich media task below. Terry is a cleaner and has been working for Happy Choc for 2 years when his employment arrangement is suddenly changed. He is offered a new work arrangement as an independent contractor.
As you watch the video, identify any issues you have about this new arrangement, how it came about and whether Terry’s workplace rights have been altered. They are all issues that will be covered in this week’s work. Terry's scenario is based on a case heard in an Australian court just a few years ago.
Suggested Procedure
- Watch the "Defining Employment" video.
- Play the video and make annotations at specific points in the video where you identify any issues you witness about this new arrangement, how it came about, and whether Terry’s workplace rights have been altered. Ensure your annotations are PUBLIC, meaning others in your group/class can see them.
- Afterwards, review your annotations with those made by others in
your group/class and those provided by the teaching team and look for
similarities and differences. How many did you come up with compared to
your peers?
