van der Waarden, N, 2017
An introductory text for students undertaking employment law subjects as part of an arts, business, human resource management or legal studies degree. This book explores core legal features of the employment relationship, focusing on the concepts and cases that explain employer and employee rights and responsibilities in Australia. It also covers key aspects of the Fair Work and uniform Work Health and Safety legislation. Important case law relevant to a study of employment law is presented simply and succinctly.
The importance of the textbook
In this course, the textbook is intended to be the authoritative source of information on course content, and the sections specified in each learning task must be read. The textbook is used extensively throughout Australia and so reflects the appropriate level of understanding that students need to have of the course material. Many students try to rely entirely on the videos in the course and avoid reading the textbook. In a course with complex processes like Employment Law, this is not a successful strategy. Due to time constraints, the videos are relatively simple in nature and do not reflect the level of understanding and complexity that is required to satisfactorily complete the course. The videos are a useful introduction to each topic so that when you read the textbook you may find it easier to understand. Just watching the videos is like only learning to crawl. Reading the textbook is like taking that knowledge to the next level.E-Readings
Most of your reading in this course will be found in your text book. Any other readings will be directly linked for you.
Required Legislation
In some learning tasks you may be asked to refer to legislation such as the Fair Work Act, 2009 (Cth). The current version of this legislation is available through either the The Federal Register of Legislation or through the Australasian Legal Information Institute.
You will also be asked to consider other, State based, legislation which can be searched via the Australasian Legal Information Institute.
