At a population level, guidelines have been developed to provide guidance to improve health of the community. As health practitioners, educators, health policy makers or any role that involves the health and wellbeing of people, it is important that the guidelines are understood to facilitate effective decisions, education and interventions. A basic understanding of how the guidelines were developed also provides additional knowledge to assist you in how to use the guidelines and in which context is appropriate.Australia's Physical activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2021) outline how much physical activity we should do, the importance of reducing the time we spend sitting or lying down, and how much sleep children and young people should get. As needs vary depending on a person's age it is important you are able to describe the guidelines for young children, school-aged children, adolescents, adults, older adults and for people with disability or chronic conditions. Watch the video below to find out why guidelines are developed and what the guidelines for physical activity and sedentary behaviour are in Australia.
