As a starting point to learn about the body, it’s important to understand what we are made of! We will explore the chemicals you will find in the body, states of matter, and some key chemistry concepts that will help you to understand human biology. To understand something, you must first understand the level of complexity below it. Therefore, to understand biology you first need to understand some chemistry.
In the reading and video below we will begin to explore some basic chemistry concepts in terms of their relevance to biology. This will help you understand how atoms and molecules relate to their biological environment.
Reading 1
Read table 2-1 (found on page 28) to see which elements make up the human body.
To help you learn about each topic and retain the information, you are encouraged to make annotations to summarise the key points of each video. You can then compare your annotations with the study notes provided. Good luck, and if you have any questions, please ask your teaching team.

Now that we have looked at how molecules are made, read pp. 38-44 to explore the molecules (carbohydrates, lipids and proteins) that are necessary for life.
