Digital technology impacts every aspect of our lives, including our homes, cars, schools and workplaces. As individuals, we depend on technology to stay connected in our personal lives, through messaging, online chat, conference calls, and video calls. Businesses also depend on many digital technologies to run efficiently and stay competitive. For instance, companies use office software and electronic databases to be productive.
Consider Apple: their launch of the first iPhone in 2007 caused major disruption to mobile phone companies, and it marked the start of Apple's massive growth. This disruptive technology also opened up business opportunities for mobile music and video services. Some other technologies that have caused significant disruption include Amazon's online retailing services and Netflix's streaming service, which have led to major transformations in industries.
These are just some of the many examples of how new digital products and services can disrupt markets. Before we learn how businesses can respond to digital disruption, it will be helpful to recall what we have previously learned about this topic.
