What: This concept gives a rationale for the fundamental need for data visualisation, and situates it historically. It also illustrates the necessity of fidelity to the facts in visualisations in order to avoid distortion
Why: The importance of visualisation skills for data professionals cannot be overstated, particularly in this era of ‘big data’. Yet the power of visualisations to inform has a concomitant power to misinform.

Learning Activities
Take a screen grab of a data visualisation you like. (You can use the resource 50 Great Examples of Data Visualization if that helps.)
Introduce yourself and your visualisation. For your visualisation, take a couple of sentences to describe what about it appeals to you.
For you, write what you hope to achieve in the course: Are you hoping to employ these skills at work (if so, how)?; are you looking to become a more discerning consumer of data visualisations?; Or do you have another motivation?
Comment on one other student’s work and welcome them to the course!
