Welcome
Welcome to UO Data Driven Web Technologies. My name is Reid Honan, I am the Online Course Facilitator and will be your primary teaching contact for this course alongside the online tutoring team. We encourage you to begin by watching the short introductory video below by Dr Rhoda Abadia.

Databases are very powerful tools used in all areas of computing. It is a key computing skill to be able to organize data, create databases and control data using query languages. Databases also provide quick access to information on the Web. We can write codes to perform data processing and respond to user queries submitted from Web browsers. For example, every time you do your online shopping or select a movie to watch from a streaming service catalog, you are interacting with a database through a web interface.
In this course, you learn how to create these interactions. This course will develop your skills in basic relational database design, structured query language or what we call a skill. You will also learn how to retrieve data from a database and display it all on an HTML page. The course has been designed to give you a strong foundation on how to create design and control relational databases. In time you will find these skills will become invaluable to you as a means of storing and querying data for information retrieval. The best way to develop these skills is through implementation and working through examples and the activities, which is what will be doing in this course. You might be wondering why you need to learn relational databases and web development together using a complex tool like school server management studio to write all queries is one thing. But what if you want to allow others with no school experience to view inquiry records? We need a different software interface to our school server. And what better than a Web browser? This course will also provide you with an opportunity to see what really happens behind the scenes of your favorite websites and the amount of effort that goes into publishing database data on the Web.
Now, take some time to read through the information contained in the Course Information and Assessment sections so that you are familiar with the requirements, expectations, and assessments for this course. If any of this information is unclear, please contact the teaching team as soon as possible.
Hope you will enjoy the course and thank you!
